The Alpha S Only Choice

Kiara woke up next morning to a bouquet of flowers, the sheer size of it told her who the sender was without her having to look at the card sticking out of the display of red in front of her.

'I am so sorry. I know you won't believe me, I swear I promised myself that I won't seek you out unless you reach for me. I just lost it last night. Watching you be so open and happy with your friends made me crave your company. It was selfish of me. I was wrong. I would have loved to apologize in person but I know you don't want to see me. So, here's me hoping you won't hate me for last night. I promise it won't ever happen again'

Yours'

Kiara looked at the flowers in front of her, then to the card in her hand, hopelessly. Millie, Mrs. Hill's grumpy cat, meowed to grab her attention and then proceeded to side eye the bouquet judgmentally. It was blocking her path. The audacity of the flowers to be in her hallway.

"Of course, Ma'am" she nodded at Millie and started pushing the bouquet into her apartment. It was heavy. It should have come with wheels. Although, she did notice that the size of the bouquet was such that it fit her door just right. Like it was made with that careful consideration. She wondered if she will ever be in a normal environment with the guy to inform him that she doesn't particularly care about flowers.

The flowers took a week to wither.

Kiara looked at them every morning before she left for work and every evening she returned. She watched it from her couch all weekend.

Sunday evening, after disposing of the flowers, she called her sister.

"I think I am going to do something stupid. Talk me out of it"

"Are you finally gonna hire an escort and get rid of that v-card?"

"You think I need to pay someone to have sex with me?"

"Duh! You need to be spontaneous about it or the wolves will ruin it" That was actually a very good point "They will probably kill the guy after. But that's not on you"

"Oh my God! Misha" Why did she expect sanity from her sister? "That's not the point and that would totally be on me. I could never do that to someone. Which brings me to my point. I was thinking....."

"Don't give in to the bullies" Misha cut her off.

"How did you know I was gonna?"

"That's the only stupid thing in your life. Everything else is pretty boring" Misha replied "Listen, you deserve a choice. You deserve to kiss a hundred frogs before finding your prince on your own terms. And it's sad that you haven't yet kissed one of those hundred frogs. This forced forever situation isn't what soulmates should be. If it was meant to be, it would happen no matter what"

"I know. I find it ridiculous too. But this situation, it's really hurting him and I...."

"You suddenly care for him?"

"My life is at a standstill, Misha. It's not just about him"

"And you are only allowed to move on with him" she hummed.

"Yes"

"It's a horrible grown up compromise I hope I never have to make coz I would have kicked every single one of them in their nuts so they couldn't reproduce again and make more nutjobs"

"I'll just talk to him. Nothing more"

"You miss talking to him, don't you?"

"What? No! I don't even know the kid......guy. I should probably stop calling him a kid"

"Yikes! That's going to be one hell of a movie to watch. I'm in. Although which part of him is a kid for you, I do not understand. I mean I would tap that if he would stop thinking about you for a minute"

"He's your age. Also, you have become a lot unhinged. College is doing bad things to you. Maybe choose another profession. Teaching wouldn't suit you"

"Don't change the subject. He is three years older than me. Not the same"

"Doesn't matter. Everytime I spoke about my annoying baby sister to Hazel, she spoke about her annoying baby brother. He reminds me of you"

"I mean, he didn't feel like a kid when he was your Wolf, did he?"

No. he didn't.

"And you miss him" MIsha continued "Your Wolf, not Matthew Wood or his crazy town. You miss checking your phone for mails every few seconds. You miss telling him about random things throughout the day. You miss smiling crazily at your phone"

"I didn't do that"

"Yes you did that a lot. Last month, mum was asking me if you broke up with your phone boyfriend. Everyone noticed. We just didn't want to jinx it. It was your first. So, yes, you miss him. And that's the only reason I am not stopping you from this stupidity. All environmental factors aside, you like him for the person he is"

"The environment wouldn't just disappear forever"

"So" Misha drawled "Uncle Jasper?"

"No!"

"Okay. Just checking" Misha giggled at the other end "Too soon"

"They wronged him just as much as they wronged me. They aren't human but uncle Jasper is. He knows how wrong that was and he still chose to go along with it"

"People change"

"I won't"

.

'We need to talk. The coffee shop near my place. Whenever you are free'

Not five minutes went by before the familiar ping of her email notification went off.

'Give me an hour. I'll be there'

An hour to commute from Bluewood? Was he already here?

In a way, it was good. Kiara has been sitting on her decision for a while. She made up her mind the evening she spoke to Misha but it took another two week for her to find the courage to send an email to the guy. Once the process was in motion, she couldn't back out.

She called her mother to inform her that she wouldn't be able to visit this weekend. She felt like she would need the weekend to herself after the meeting.

Making sure she didn't dress up for the occasion, she left her apartment. The constant buzz of anxiety in her head didn't let her overthink it. Her brain basically froze. She was walking forward relying just on her instincts.

She was in the middle of the cafe before she realized she was there. She also realized Matt was already there, standing up as soon as she entered. He was seated in the far corner of the cafe, by the window. He probably saw her cross the road, dazed like a zombie. Taking a steady breath, she lauded herself for not fumbling as she reached his table.

"Hi" he smiled, pulling a chair for her.

"Thank you" people don't pull chairs for others in cafes, she didn't mention that.

"Always" he grinned cockily, taking his seat. Or it was probably just his normal grin that Kiara was prejudiced against.

"So I...." she fumbled, what was she here to talk about, again? "I got your flowers"

"And my apology" He said "I am so sorry. I have no excuse. I can't believe you are here after what I did...." he frowned "unless you are here to tell me that you will never see me again. I.."

"No. That's not it" she stopped him "I wanted to talk about something else. Not that evening"

"Did something happen?" he looked a different kind of a anxious now "Are you okay"

"I am fine. Just...." she huffed "this is not the ideal place for this meeting"

"Well, I thought you wanted a safe crowd" 'Impersonal' would be the word Kiara would use.

The server came up just as she started to reply "What can I get for you lovebirds today?"

"Oh, we are not together" Kiara said instinctively.

"No?" the girl, probably in her late teens, gave Matt an interesting glance "Alright. What can I get you?"

"Coffee. Black. No sugar" Matt looked at Kiara with a raised brow.

"Same. With sugar" Kiara smiled at the girl "And I will take one of those cupcakes with blue icings" she pointed at the electronic display.

"And you don't want anything with your coffee?" the girl asked Matt "Something sweet for the bitter coffee"

"No. Thank you. I don't like refined sugar"

"I can see that"

Matt looked at her with narrowed eyes, like he was confused why she was still there.

"You do realize she was hitting on you?" she smiled once the server left with their orders.

"Yes. It's one of the annoying traits of being what I am. I can smell people, hear their heartbeats"

"So you just acted confused?"

He shrugged "Works often"

"Do you always understand what others are feeling without them having to tell you?"

"Not exactly. Just like humans guess what someone's feeling by looking at them, we do too. We just have the added support of superior hearing and a keen sense of smell. But we don't exactly know if we are correct or what the reason for the emotion is. Like your heartbeat was crazy before you walked over here. You could be agitated or angry or very excited. You don't smell angry, you don't look excited.....so agitated" he said the last words with a sad smile.

"I don't know if I should be amazed or irritated by this invasion of privacy. It's a bit....you know"

"Sorry, can't turn it off" he shrugged "With others, I could try. But my wolf just perks up whenever you are around"

"I guess I have to get used to it"

He frowned before leaning forward "You do?" Kiara didn't have to be a wolf to hear his heart drumming beats.

"Listen, I have been thinking" She looked around hoping something drastic would happen, it was a good time for an earthquake. She wouldn't mind one. Matt nodded, urging her to continue "I mean I am not promising anything, I'll be honest, but I am open for dialogue" She mentally facepalmed herself as soon as she said it.

But before she could explain further, the look on Matt's face stopped her. It was like he had stopped breathing, his face heated red. He stared at her for moments, unblinking.

The server returned with their orders. It was when she said, "One black coffee, no sugar...." that he looked up at her.

"She said yes" he told the girl dumbly.

"What?"

"She said yes" he repeated louder this time.

"No she didn't" Kiara chimed in but no one was listening to her.

Mat stood up and started pacing the lane between the two rows of tables like a madman. A couple of heads turned towards them.

"I guess congratulations are in order" the girl smiled at Kiara "Should I get another cupcake?"

"It's not what you think. And he really hates refined sugar" At least that's one thing Wolf didn't lie about "Thank you for the coffee. He will get back here when he calms down. I hope you guys don't mind him much"

"Not at all" she winked, leaving Kiara to her fate.

Kiara took a deep breath "Matthew, please sit down"

Matt stopped pacing, looked at her, and then grinned that wolfy grin of his. Now that Kiara equated that grin with a wolf's, she couldn't unsee it. She nodded at the chair opposite to her. He relented.

"I don't have words" he said after he settled down "I mean when I begged Grampa to lend me his jet so I could rush to you faster. I thought I did something....."

"You came from Bluewood in less than an hour because you brought your grandfather's jet?" She asked in disbelief.

"I have a permit" he sounded offended at her tone "Couldn't ask dad, he would put his men at guard" He looked around "Might still have somehow managed to do that" he frowned.

"What about your own jet? Didn't you get one yet?"

"That's.... sarcasm, isn't it?" He narrowed his eyes.

"Not at all, rich boy"

"Ha ha very funny" He grumbled "Drink your diabetes" he sipped his own.

"Do werewolves get diabetes?"

"Not really. Body temperature and faster metabolism gets us out of a lot of diseases"

"Must be nice. My family has a history of it"

"You wouldn't have it"

"You don't know it. I am at a higher risk" she looked sadly at her cupcake "I should eat as many as I can before I can't"

He snorted "I know that because being with me will immunize you too"

"Wow! That's a very impressive pick up line. How does that work?"

"Can't tell you or you will kick me out of your home before you let me enter it" he smirked.

"You aren't entering my home either way"

He laughed before realizing the look on her face "Seriously?"

"That's one of the rules of this friendship, no sneaking in without my permission"

"Friendship?"

"You have a problem with that?"

He thought for a moment "As long as it leads to something more"

"Let's just not make a ten year plan yet"

"I don't know how to not make plans" He frowned "That's what dad suggested I do with you. Set a time limit and tell you that I am going to make you fall in love with me in that much time. It worked for him and it worked for Gran Jean. It's kind of a family legacy. I was about to suggest it today after I apologized"

Kiara really didn't know if she should punch some sense into the wolves or laugh at them "And you are telling me this because?"

"You already agreed to that with no time limit" he seemed puzzled at that "And Grandma and Anna told me to be honest with you"

"You should listen to Grandma and Anna more" And throw that whole father of yours away, remained unsaid, "So, no more planning and plotting"

"Okay" He agreed reluctantly.

"No getting Bluewood involved"

"But you are moving in, right?" He asked, confused.

"What?"
